Xiaomi’s latest audio headphones creation is this hybrid in-ear monitor earphones. Most earphones contain one dynamic driver to produce audio. The Xiaomi Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro has one dynamic driver for mid and bass, and another balanced armature driver for treble. Xiaomi product website describes how the earphones are designed.
I was rather intrigued by this hybrid dual driver design, so I placed an order via GearBest. The item reached me in late November, and several weeks later, Xiaomi officially launched it in Singapore for $27.99.
The earphones are really comfortable to wear. They feel so light despite their metal construction, and the included eartips are soft so there is no strain in my ear canals.
Initial impression out of the box, the earphones sounded not as bright as I would have expected. The bass is full and substantial, and while I could hear details in the treble, it lacks the clarity, which audiophiles would described as “dark”.
After experiencing how eartips could alter the sound balance, I tried to fit some other eartips that I have. Eventually, I found that the double-flanged eartips work really great for me. The treble becomes clearer and the bass is more natural sounding, delivering good balance albeit slight bloat at mid-bass. The sound staging is close and tight, not unlike most IEM. At loud passages, each instrument is contending with one another to get “airtime”, but never did the high treble go distorted. It appears the balanced armature driver has done its job well.
This new Xiaomi earphones have now become my favourite earphones to listen to while on the move. Its lightweight, ease of wearing, and durable build are plus points. It does not deliver the most premium sound, but neither is the price tag.
